MC to issue challans for open defecation in city

In an attempt to make the city open defecation-free, the Municipal Corporation of Bathinda formed teams to carry out checking.

The teams will also issue challans to those who defecate in the open.

The decision was taken during a meeting held at the MC office in which it was decided that the state of movable toilets installed at different locations in the city would also be checked and repaired.

During the meeting, MC officials decided that all movable toilets would be reassessed.

The movable toilets, which need to be maintained, will be repaired soon. The MC will also reduce or increase the number of movable toilets as per the requirements.

A total of eight teams had been formed to carry out checks in different parts of the city to ensure that open defecation is not allowed and those found defecating in the open will be issued challans. The officials conceded that maintaining proper sanitation and hygienic conditions in the city would remain a priority for the civic body in the coming days.

Davinder Jaura, Assistant Town Planner (ATP), said, “The teams will visit slum areas and other parts of the city to ensure that open defecation is not allowed. City residents found defecating in the open will be issued challans.”

To make the city open defecation-free, the MC, under the Central Government scheme, has helped construct many private toilets and has made 37 public toilets at various places in the city. In slum areas, seven mobile toilets have been placed and feedback system has been put in place. The MC is not leaving no stone unturned in involving city residents in its initiative.

Earlier, MC officials exhorted the public to register cleanliness-related complaints. The corporation has promised the residents that the complaints would be resolved at the earliest.
