Bathinda, December 7

City NGO Naujawan Welfare Society has written a letter to all Deputy Commissioners and SSPs across the state, demanding strict action against the persons involved in storing, selling or purchasing the ‘killer’ Chinese string in the state, as per the NGT order under the Environment Protection Act 1986, Provision of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and IPC.

NGO Naujawan Welfare Society president Sonu Maheshwari said the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2017 had passed an order stating that a case under non-bailable sections of the Environment Protection Act 1986, Provision of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and IPC should be registered against the persons involved in storing, selling or purchasing Chinese string for kite flying.

He has stated that despite the order the police were not taking action against the violators.

Commuters are the most vulnerable as a slight contact with the Chinese thread can cause severe injuries.

In some cases, people have received grievous injuries in the past in the city. It is also a big threat to birds.

Traditionally, special strings are made for kite flying. These strings are made of thin cotton thread, which is treated with a paste made of glue and finely powdered glass to make it strong, whereas Chinese thread is made of nylon, with a metal coating giving it extra sharpness.
