Slain youth’s kin block road, demand arrest of accused

BATHINDA: The body of a youth was found hanging from a tree near a Kotbhai water channel.

The body of a youth was found hanging from a tree near a Kotbhai water channel. The deceased has been identified as Prem Singh, a resident of Mehma Bhagwana.

The Nehiawala police station has registered a case against seven villagers on the statement of the victim’s father. After conducting a postmortem on Sunday, the police handed over the body to the family members.

Kin of the deceased on Sunday staged a protest by keeping the body in the middle of the road blocking the Bathinda-Muktsar road at Mehma Bhagwana village demanding the arrest of the accused booked on the charge of abetment to suicide in this case.

After getting the information, Nihal Singhwala police post in-charge Harbans Singh, along with the SHO, Nehiawala police station, reached the spot with police force.

The victim’s father Niranjan Singh, brother Tarsem Singh and relative Lakha Singh said a week ago a few persons of Burj Mehma village had come to drop Prem at night, during which their neighbours, owing to their old rivalry, beat them up, including Prem.

They alleged the police which reached the spot instead of taking any action against their neighbour, beat up Prem Singh and others.

Relatives claimed that irked over which Prem ended his life on Saturday. They said the police had registered a case against the accused, but were not arresting the accused. So, they were holding a protest by keeping the body on the road. Police post in-charge refuted the allegations claiming that they did not beat up them. The police had launched a hunt to arrest the accused, he said.
