Transform ideas into venture, budding entrepreneurs told

An awareness lecture-cum-open session on ‘Academics, innovation and entrepreneurship- path from idea to reality’ was organised by the Institution’s Innovation Council at the Central University of Punjab on Saturday.

The main objective of the event was to encourage, inspire and nurture young students to work on new ideas and transform these into a successful entrepreneurship. The keynote speakers were Dr Hemant R Kushwaha, co-ordinator of the Innovation and Incubation Centre, JNU; and Dr Anupama Singh, CEO of Sequoia Insilico Pvt Ltd, a health informatics company incubated at the Innovation and Incubation Centre of the JNU. Faculty members and students from various departments participated in the programme.

Kushwaha said entrepreneur was a self-motivated person, who created new business in the face of future risks to achieve profits by identifying and assembling the necessary resources. “Entrepreneurs make others’ lives easier with their innovative ideas and solutions,” he said.

He talked about various qualities of an entrepreneur and shared the examples of innovative sustainable development products such as solar mosquito destroyer, eco-cooler, water wheel, low-cost loo and portable water purifier among others.

Dr Anupama delivered an oration on ‘Transforming academic excellence into enterprise’. She informed in detail about services offered by the Office of Development Commissioner, Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) such as facilities for testing of innovative ideas, training for entrepreneurship development, preparation of project and product profiles, technical and managerial consultancy, assistance for exports, pollution and energy audits.

Prof Ramakrishna Wusirika, Dean of the School of Global Relations, said: “India has improved its ranking in Global Innovation Index by five points in the past one year from 57 to 52.”

An open session was organised, where experts interacted with faculty and students and shared their experiences from ‘idea to reality’.
