Water crisis is likely to deepen in the city in the coming days as Sirhind Canal will be closed for 21 days from November 10. The administration has appealed to the public to use water judiciously.

Irrigation Department XEN GS Bahia said, “Sirhind Canal will remain closed for 21 days from November 10 to 30 due to some construction work at the Ropar head works to the Sirhind Canal system.”

He said the Water Department and others who take water from the canal had already been told to store sufficient water in their storage tanks and make a plan for its use so that people don’t face a shortage in the cities and villages.

Triveni Company DGM VB Shivangi said, “We have got information regarding Sirhind Canal closure for 21 days. We have already filled the water storage tank, but during closure we will reduce 50 per cent water supply in the city as it would be supplied only once a day, whereas at present, we are providing water in two shifts — morning and evening.”

Residents, who are already affected in many areas at present, are worrying that it would intensify their problem.

Pawan Kumar, a city resident, said “The department claims that water will be supplied once a day, but in reality no water is supplied in many areas during the canal closure.”

Mayor Balwant Rai Nath has appealed to the city residents to use water judiciously to avoid its scarcity.

He also advised residents not to use water for cleaning cars and other vehicles. He asked the residents to cooperate with the administration till November 30.
