Ambala, February 18

More than 120 students belonging to Jammu and Kashmir left the campus of Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMDU) at Mullana here for their native places on Monday.

Sources said not only the students who had shifted from Mullana village to hostels, but also those who were already staying in hostels were leaving the campus.

They said though the officials claimed that around 48 students left the campus on Monday, the actual figures were more than that.

Adnan, a student from Jammu, said: “We are leaving for Jammu as our parents are worried. The administration is supporting us and no one has said anything to us. We will return when the situation is back to normal.”

Meanwhile, heavy police force have been deployed to avoid any untoward incident. Also, outsiders are not allowed to enter the campus.

Irfan, a Kashmiri student who was leaving for Mohali, said, “There were around 350 to 400 students in Mullana of which maximum have either left or will leave soon. We have been provided security, but it gives a sense of inferiority as wherever we go, two personnel come along with us. Even Hindu students from Kashmir are leaving. The security is dividing instead of uniting us. Our return depends on future circumstances.”

Barara SDM Girish Chawla said: “Around 110 students, who were staying in Mulllana village, were shifted to hostels. There are around 400 students who belong to Kashmir and ample security has been provided to them. Exams of some students are on.”

He said some students were going to Chandigarh where their parents were reaching, while some had hired direct taxies to Jammu.

Barara DSP Sudhir Taneja said: “As many as 48 students left the campus on Monday after taking permission from the university.”

Meanwhile, the ‘dhaba’ operators outside the university were a little anxious as several students had left without clearing their dues.
