Chandigarh, December 7

In a major drive against illegal vendors, the enforcement wing of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today carried out an anti-encroachment drive in the Sadar Market, Sector 19, Shastri Market, Sector 22, and corridors in Sector 18 and 20 here.

The drive was carried out under the supervision of MC Additional Commissioner Tilak Raj. Three teams of the enforcement wing issued challans to 195 vendors in the markets during the drive, which lasted for over five hours.

Illegal vendors sitting in the parking area and verandahs of Sadar Market, Sector 19, and Shastri Market, Sector 22, were removed.

The drive was carried out a day after Commissioner KK Yadav issued directions to the enforcement department to issue challans to registered vendors who are not paying street vending fees and have occupied the space more than 6X5 sq ft.

Unregistered street vendors will also be evicted from the markets. The Commissioner issued the directions after revoking the order issued on May 13, 2016, which stated that no street vendor would be evicted till the survey was completed and the registration certificate was issued.
