Chandigarh, October 13

The first free surgery under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23 was performed at the GMCH on Saturday.

The 38-year-old patient suffered multiple ligament injury in his right knee after a fall from stairs. The patient came to the OPD as a referred case. He belongs to colony no 4 in Chandigarh.

Ligament injury of the knee is serious and if not treated well can lead to damage of the knee joint.

With this surgery, the patient is likely to have near normal function of the knee joint. Since the patient belonged to poor patient category, he was explained about the scheme in the OPD and was admitted to the GMCH under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.

With the launch of the scheme, the patient was able to afford the treatment in a timely manner without any expenses.

Prof BS Chavan, Director-Principal, said the GMCH was able to offer more than 1,000 sanctioned packages under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
