PATIALA: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) held a Lok Adalat on Saturday. Out of 6,815 cases taken up during the Lok Adalat, as many as 3,410 cases were settled with mutual consent. The adalat was held under the supervision of the executive chairman, Punjab State Legal Services Authority, Justice TPS Maan; and guidance of Sanjiv Berry, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, DLSA, Patiala. Cases except non-compoundable criminal cases were heard at 13 judicial benches. The cases involved an amount of Rs 27.76 crore. TNS
Asst profs on strike tomorrow
Patiala: Contractual assistant professors associated with the Punjabi University Contractual Teachers' Association (PUCTA) in Punjabi University have decided to go on strike at their respective constituent colleges from Monday. They said they held several meetings with officials of the university regarding regularisation of their services and salary hike, but the authorities failed to take any decision. As many as 120 contractual assistant professors are working in Punjabi University's 14 constituent colleges. Meanwhile, a contractual teacher associated with PUCTA has threatened on social media to commit suicide and burn her degrees outside the office of VC BS Ghuman on July 23. TNS
Minor fire at PGI block
Chandigarh: A minor fire incident was reported at a room of the Kairon block (Administrative block) at the PGI on Saturday morning. According to fire officials of the PGI, no damage was reported. Preliminary investigations revealed that there was a short-circuit in a tube light around 9.30 am at the committee room of the block, leading to smoke. A security guard noticed the smoke and informed the fire department of the PGI. A fire tender was rushed to the spot, but the smoke was controlled and the fire didn’t spread. — TNS
Golfer Kang finishes second
Chandigarh: City golfer Harjinder Singh Kang (in pic) finished second in the All India Mid Amateur and Senior Open 2018, which concluded at the JP Greens Golf Course in Greater Noida on Friday. Kang carded (69-76-73-72) a total of 290 to finish two strokes behind the winner Simarjeet Singh of Delhi. Over 60 amateur golfers participated in the tournament. Kang has also been selected to represent the Indian team against South Africa in November. “We played in extreme conditions as it was very hot and humidity was almost 95 per cent. However, I am happy with my scores and am looking forward to represent India in the match against South Africa in November,” Kang said. — TNS
Twin titles for Vinay Kumar
Chandigarh: Para athlete Vinay Kumar has won two gold medals in the recently concluded World Para Athletics Grand Prix at South Africa. He clocked 12.02s to top the field in the 100m dash, while he completed the 200m race in 25.06s to claim another gold medal. Vinay is also looking to participate in the Para Asian Athletics Championship, which is scheduled to be held in October. — TNS
Rajvardhan to lead rugby team
Chandigarh: Chandigarh Rugby Football Association on Saturday selected a 12-member squad for the upcoming Junior National Rugby Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, from July 20. The team will be led by Rajvardhan Singh. Other members of the squad are Arun, Nikhil, Prabhjot Singh, Rahul Kakkar, Bikram Bahadur, Sandeep, Suraj Singh, Jatin, Harjinder Singh, Prashant Thakur and Aman Chand. — TNS
