Chandigarh, October 22

The juvenile court here acquitted four minors of the charge of assaulting two on-duty policemen two years ago. The police failed to prove the allegation against the boys and they were thus let off.

As per the FIR in the case, on June 10, 2016, Constable Umesh Kumar, along with a driver, were on patrol duty on a motorcycle. When they reached near the forest area of Sector 53, they saw seven to eight youths creating a ruckus. On seeing the police, they tried to run away from the spot. A couple of them tried to flee on a motorcycle but banged it into the cops’ bike.

The complainant, Constable Umesh Kumar, stated that as soon as they (policemen) got up, they were attacked by the youths. The policemen were assaulted and their uniforms torn. They then fled from the spot. Some ran towards Kajheri while others on the motorcycle.

The two cops chased the attackers and caught six of them. While four of them, who were juveniles, have been acquitted by the juvenile court, the others are undergoing trial, as per defence counsel Sajjal Sharma.

An FIR under Sections 279, 147, 149, 332 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code and under the Motor Vehicles Act was registered against them. However, the prosecution failed to prove the allegations in the court.
