Chandigarh, December 4

On an average, four unknown persons were found dead in the city every month this year. The bodies were either found lying on the roadside or in market areas, following which these were shifted to government hospitals.

Police figures reveal that a total of 42 unidentified bodies were found in different parts of the city till November 2.

The victims were from different age groups. One of the victims was newborn. A large percentage of the victims were middle-aged and above 60 years.

Police officials said these persons were either found dead or lying unconscious at public places and forest areas. The police were informed about it and the bodies were taken to the nearby government hospitals.

One of the victims had also died in a hit-and-run. His identity too could not be established.

“We make efforts to trace their families and even get an advertisement with their pictures published in newspapers,” said a police official.

RK Garg, president, Second Innings Association, said there was a need to have a census of beggars and migrants, who live in the open, including market corridors and bus stops. Such a census would help in their identification, which would also deter them from indulging in any criminal activity.
