The local police claim to have busted a gang of vehicle thieves with the arrest of five persons here. The police said 10 two-wheelers and a car had been recovered from them. They have been identified as Nitesh Kumar, Salman Khan, Gajraj Singh and Raju, residents of Sohana, and Vijay Kumar from Kurali.

Varun Sharma, Mohali Superintendent of Police, said after stealing vehicles, the thieves used to sell spare parts to scrap dealers.

The SP said Raju was a hardcore criminal, who was an accused in a murder case.

“We recovered seven motorcycles, three Activa scooters and a car. We are verifying the details of scrap dealers, who were buying the parts of stolen vehicles,” the SP said.

The police said the gang was active in Mohali for the past three years. They used to target vehicles in parking lots and in front of houses using master keys.

A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC has been registered against them at the Balongi police station.
