CHANDIGARH: A 62-year-old man reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Sector 41. According to the police, the victim has been identified as Vijay Sharma.

CHANDIGARH: A 62-year-old man reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Sector 41. According to the police, the victim has been identified as Vijay Sharma. His kin informed the police about the incident following which a PCR team reached the spot. He was rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where doctors declared him brought dead. The police have initiated inquest proceedings into the matter at the Sector 39 police station. TNS

Cash recovered from snatchers

Panchkula: The local police have recovered Rs 7,000 in two different cases of snatchings from two snatchers, Kavi Bisht and Atul Thakur, who were arrested on May 16. The police recovered Rs 2,000 from Kavi Bisht in a case registered against him on April 21 at the Sector 5 police station while Rs 5,000 were recovered from Atul Thakur in a case registered at the MDC police station on May 9. Both Kavi and Atul were arrested by the crime branch, which claimed to have solved 11 cases of snatchings in Chandigarh as well as Panchkula with their arrest. The police had also recovered a scooty used in the crime. Both Kavi and Atul had committed three snatchings in the city, including robbing an elderly woman of a purse containing Rs 7,000, a gold chain and earrings on May 11 in Sector 21. On April 21 and May 9, they had snatched purses from two women in Sector 7 and Sector 4 in the MDC area, respectively. TNS

Hockey c’ship from today

Chandigarh: Hockey Chandigarh will organise the State Sub-Junior Women Hockey Championship from May 21-24. The tournament will be held at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here and seven teams will participate in it. The tournament will be played on knockout basis, the sports body said here on Monday. The teams have been divided in two pools and the top two from each group will qualify for the semifinals, scheduled to be held on May 23. TNS

St Xavier’s win carrom opener  

Panchkula: St Xavier’s School blanked The Gurukul boys 3-0 in their opening match of the 13th Clive Shear Carrom Tournament here on Monday. Dikshant International School, Zirakpur, registered a 2-1 win over St Xavier’s School, Mohali, while Saupin’s School got the better of CL DAV School. In the girls’ category, the hosts St Xavier’s School defeated CL DAV School, Panchkula, while St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, outplayed Dikshant School. The Gurukul was awarded a walkover against Shemford Futuristic School, Pinjore. TNS

Cricket tourney from June 1

Panchkula: The Narinder Walia Cricket Academy will organise the U-16 Summer Cup from June 1 at St Soldier School, Sector 16. Players born on or after September 1, 2004, will be eligible to participate in the championship, the organisers said here on Monday. The interested teams need to register for the tournament before May 30. TNS
