As many as 85 Punjabi University professors today submitted applications to the varsity administration and sought permission to contest the 2019 General Election. The total number of teachers who have sought such permissions has crossed 100.

The teachers sought the permission for contesting polls in order to evade deputation on election duties. Teaching departments witnessed complete shut down.

Almost every associate and assistant professor of the university has been deputed on election duty by the District Election Officer. Professors said most of the teachers who have been deputed on election duty forwarded their applications to contest the polls.

Professor Jaswinder Singh Brar today said, “Around 85 professors submitted their applications for contesting elections.”

Agitating teachers said the University Calendar clearly mentions that they can take part in political developments in the state.

Prof BS Ghuman, V-C, Punjabi University, held a meeting with the teachers and assured them that he would discuss the matter with the officials concerned.
