To redress grievances of the people at their door steps and get first hand information about drug addicts and peddlers at the grass root level, the district police under the Tandarust Punjab Mission launched a campaign “Police at your doorstep” under the banner of  “Sanjhi Saath” (Common place for sitting) here on Sunday.  The campaign is not only getting overwhelming response from the people, but also proving a boon for drug addicts, as more and more families are coming forward for the treatment of their kin hooked to drugs.

The SSP, Alka Meena, said, “This campaign has been launched to redress grievances of the people at their door steps and identify drug peddlers and addicts in the district.”

She said under the programme, every SHO would visit one village and one ward of the town daily under his police station. He would interact with the people at the common place in the village for suggestions and how to overcome the curse of drug abuse, she added.

“The SHO will collect information about drug addicts and peddlers. He will take addicts to the rehabilitation centre, where they will be treated free of cost. He will also assure villagers that peddlers will be taken to task,” she said.

Problems of residents related to the police would be solved on the spot, she added.

“Without people’s involvement, nothing concrete can be achieved. I appeal to the people to come forward and join hands with the police under this campaign to completely eradicate the drug menace from the district,” the SSP said.

“A help line No. 85588-18100, where informer’s identity will be kept a closely guarded secret, has been launched,” she added. Interestingly, before launching the awareness campaign, the SSP administered an oath to police officials to fight against drug abuse. She reminded them that the Punjab Police was known for fighting against all evils. “If we can wipe out terrorism, then surely we will eradicate the menace of drug abuse from Punjab,” she said.
