When the entire country is in grief and paying tribute to the CRPF soldiers killed in the Pulwama terror attack, there is no fun in holding Rose Festival from February 22 to 24. Funds earmarked for this function two months ago will be fully utilised and nothing will be left to donate for the families of the martyred soldiers. Moreover, as per the weatherman, rain is expected during this week, which may waterlog the area and spoil the whole show. Therefore, it is advisable to cancel this festival and donate the money meant for the event to the welfare of families of the martyred.  AS Ahuja, Chandigarh

Punjab fiscal health in a shambles

W ith a revenue deficit of Rs 11,687 crore and fiscal deficit of Rs 19,658 crore, the Punjab Finance Minister passed the budget and the government made sure that no new burden is put on the people. No new taxes are introduced and fuel prices are reduced. The state’s debt is going to rise from Rs 2.12 crore to Rs 2.29 crore. Punjab is reeling under debt crisis as the Finance Minister has time and again raised the issue of empty treasury. How can this be possible? It is the responsibility of the authorities to maintain balance between revenue and expenditure of the state. The state is grappling with certain problems, be it financial health of the state, farming crisis, drug addiction or increasing crime rate, the list is long. The Finance Minister should come up with an idea to reduce the outstanding debt, otherwise the state will land in hot soup. Jaspreet Singh, Patiala

Street vendors a big nuisance

The number of street vendors has increased substantially in the past few years. With no fear of getting challaned by the MCC or the Food Department, vendors can be seen in every corner of the tricity. Even after a report on sale of food items in unhygienic conditions at the PGI came to the fore, no action has been taken by the MCC or the Health Department. Ninety-five per cent vendors do not wear aprons, caps, gloves and use dustbins. The source of raw material is also uncertified. Street vendors are also a major reason for congestion in markets and traffic jams on roads. The departments concerned should take immediate action against the street vendors. The High Court should also intervene into the matter and take necessary action against government departments for negligence. Deepak Arora, Chandigarh
