Chirag beats Eric, enters quarters

CHANDIGARH:Second seed Chirag Duhan of Haryana registered a 6-1 6-0 win over Karnataka’s Nithilan Eric to seal a spot in the boys’ quarterfinals at the 13th Ramesh Desai Memorial U-16 Tennis Nationals in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Second seed Chirag Duhan of Haryana registered a 6-1 6-0 win over Karnataka’s Nithilan Eric to seal a spot in the boys’ quarterfinals at the 13th Ramesh Desai Memorial U-16 Tennis Nationals in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Punjab’s Dhruv Tangri also had an easy outing against Maharashtra’s Arjun Gohad. The fourth seed won 6-2 6-3 to book a berth in the last eight.  

Haryana’s Krishan Hooda and Karan Singh also won their respective pre-quarterfinal matches. While fifth seed Hooda downed state-mate Aman Dahiya 6-0 6-4, Karan edged out Manipur’s got Bushan Haobam 6-3 6-1.   

Ajay Singh, also from Haryana, however, lost his pre-quarterfinal tie to third seed Denim Yadav of Madhya Pradesh. Ajay lost 3-6 6-2 1-6 to crash out of the tournament.   

Ayushman Arjeria of Madhya Pradesh, meanwhile, outplayed 14th seed Yashraj Dalvi of Maharashtra to stay in contention for a place in the semifinals. Arjeria won 6-3 6-1. 

Renne moves ahead

In the girls’ competition, Haryana’s Renne Singla continued her impressive run in the tournament as she packed off Tamil Nadu’s Lakshmi Arunkumar in straight sets to move into the quarterfinals. The seventh seed won 6-0 7-5. 

Eighth Pari Singh, also from Haryana, overcame Karnataka’s Saniya Masand 6-1 4-6 6-1, but her state-mate and 16th seed Anjali Rathi succumbed to Karnataka’s Reshma Maruri without putting up a fight. Anjali lost 2-6 3-6.
