A local court has acquitted a 22-year-old local resident in a drug case.

According to the prosecution, a police team nabbed Jaipreet Singh, a resident of Sector 20-B, Chandigarh, during a patrolling in Sector 20-C. They recovered 20.5 grams of heroin from his possession.

Following the recovery, a case under Section 21 of the NDPS Act was registered against Jaipreet at the Sector 19 police station on August 5, 2017.

During trial, the defence counsel argued that Section 50 of the NDPS Act, which is mandatory as per the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, was not compliance with during the search of the suspect.

As per Section 50 of

the NDPS Act, before searching any person, the police have to give an option to search him before any magistrate or a gazetted officer.
