Civic body identifies 28 areas as no-vending zones

After years of collecting data of street vendors, formulating plans for street vending and no-vending zones  in the city, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has finally decided to include 28 areas as no-vending zones. 

The MC has included nearly 1,000 vendors in the list of vendors who will be given ID cards for street vending upon payment of specified fee to the corporation. Officials said the street vendors will not be allowed to set up shop or roam in no-vending zones.

Officials of the MC on Thursday held a meeting of the street-vending committee and decided upon its modalities. 

They included a total of 28 areas in the list of no-vending zones that includes the Khanda roundabout, Chotti Baradari roundabout, Mata Kaushalaya Hospital road, Thapar roundabout, Mini Secretariat road, Gurudwara Dukh Niwaran roundabout, Bus stand roundabout, Leela Bhawan roundabout, Nabha road roundabout, road opposite the MC, Sheran Wala gate, Lehal roundabout, Qila roundabout, Kohli roundabout, Parshuram roundabout, YPS roundabout, Modi College roundabout among others.

The move will provide relief to residents and commuters who frequently face traffic jams at places, including Mata Kaushalaya Hospital road, the bus stand roundabout, Leela Bhawan roundabout, Sheran Wala gate and other places.

Officials said they have included various areas of the city where street vending will be allowed in these areas. “The street vendors will be allowed to sell their products in their specific allotted zone only”, they said adding that the ID cards will be provided to the vendors in the coming week.

962 included in street vendors’ list

The Municipal Corporation has added names of as many as 962 vendors in the list of street vendors prepared earlier. 

The list of 3163 vendors was prepared after a through survey conducted by the MC in early 2017 according to which the vendors were to be rehabilitated at nearly 15 places. 

The MC also decided to hire a private consultant firm for implementation of the Street Vendors Act, 2014. 

Later, in July 2018, the MC floated a tender and gave work orders for preparation of a street vending plan to a private company, a process which has been going on since then.
