Residents of Kharar were soaked in the Independence Day celebrations, but people residing near Darpan City gathered and expressed their resentment against the administration’s lackadaisical attitude when it comes to maintaining cleanliness in the town. They demanded shifting of the dumping ground from their vicinity to some other place.

Jarnail Singh, Yashpal Sharma, Harpreet Singh, Sukhwinder Singh and Rakesh Bhardwaj, all residents of Darpan City, said people had been struggling for the past three years for getting the garbage dump shifted, but their efforts had so far proven futile.

They said leaders from various political parties visited Darpan City in the past and promised them that they would get the garbage dump shifted, but no development had taken place so far.

Foul smell emanating from the dumping ground had made life of the people living in the vicinity hell, they added.

“The place has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies. The chief and officials of the local Municipal Council have repeatedly assured us that the dumping ground will be shifted, but nothing has been done in this regard,” they added.

They said around 70 MT of garbage was being dumped here every day, which was creating a lot of problem for residents of Darpan City, Darpan Greens, Dhidsa Colony and Garden Colony.

The residents urged the Kharar SDM to solve the problem. They have also tweeted Local Bodies Minister Navjot Sidhu to come to their rescue.

When contacted, Varinder Jain, acting Executive Officer, Kharar Municipal Council, said, “The council is looking for an alternative place for shifting the dumping ground. I hope that the problem will be solved soon.”
