A 28-year-old woman was beaten to death by being hit repeatedly with a tea pan allegedly by her husband in Zirakpur here on Thursday night. The man fled from the spot after committing the crime.

The deceased has been identified as Mamandeep Kaur, who belonged to Bathinda but was putting up at Mona Greens, a housing society in Zirakpur.

On a complaint of Gurdev Singh, brother of the deceased, the police have registered a case of murder against Gurpreet Singh.

Gurdev Singh of Bathinda, in his complaint to the police, said his brother-in-law Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Kotha Guru, a village falling under the Bathinda jurisdiction, was deported from London and had tied the knot with Mamandeep Kaur last year. The couple then shifted to Zirakpur and had been staying here since June 20, 2017.

The complainant stated that Gurpreet Singh was unemployed for the past one year and had been harassing Mamandeep Kaur for not bringing enough dowry. The complainant told the police that his brother-in-law had been demanding a car to run his own taxi business and had frequently indulged in fights with his sister on small matters.

Gurdev added that his sister called him up around 4 pm on Thursday and then spoke to her mother Parkash Kaur alleging that she was being harassed and tortured by Gurpreet Singh over one issue or the other.

He told the police that they received a call from Gurpreet Singh on Thursday night saying that Mamandeep Kaur had hit herself with a sharp object on her head and was bleeding profusely. When Gurdev asked his brother-in-law to hand over the phone to Mamandeep Kaur, Gurpreet disconnected the phone. Sensing something fishy, the family reached Zirakpur and found Mamandeep Kaur lying in a pool of blood.

The Zirakpur police received information around 11.30 pm on Thursday and rushed to the spot and took the body into their possession. The police said it appeared that she had been repeatedly hit on her head with a tea pan and a steel kettle as there were deep injury marks on the right side of the head and an eye.

The police have seized the blood-stained tea pan and the steel kettle, which were found lying inside the room near the body. The police said on Thursday night, Gurpreet Singh picked up a fight with Mamandeep and, in a fit of rage, hit her with a tea pan till she collapsed. He then fled from the house.

The police handed over the body to the family members after conducting an autopsy at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi.
