After remaining vacant for nearly 10 months, the post of the Dera Bassi Municipal Council president will finally be filled soon. Notably, the post was lying vacant since February after Bhupinder Saini, the then president of the Dera Bassi Municipal Council, resigned from his post on February 18.

Now, the administration is all set to hold elections to fill the post of the civic body president on December 11 as per the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Following the court orders, Mohali Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra today issued a notice to Paramjit Singh, SDM of Dera Bassi, in which she directed him to conduct the elections for the post of the Dera Bassi Municipal Council president without any delay.

Sources said the High Court had directed the administration to conduct elections for the president’s post on December 11 on the MC premises while taking up a petition filed by SAD-BJP councillors. Owing to the political rivalry between the ruling Congress and SAD-BJP councillors, the post of the MC president was lying vacant for the past 10 months.

Notably, the Dera Bassi MC is dominated and controlled by SAD-BJP councillors, including local MLA NK Sharma. At present in the House of 19 councillors, the SAD-BJP alliance has got 18 councillors.

It is pertinent to mention that following the resignation of Bhupinder Saini, local political circles were abuzz with a number of rumours over his resignation. Though the exact reason was not clear, it was believed that Bhupinder paved way for his close aide, another SAD-BJP councillor, to complete rest of the remaining tenure as the Dera Bassi MC president.

Meanwhile, Bhupinder’s resignation in February this year had given a new twist to the local politics with several other councillors starting lobbying for occupying the post of the MC president.

The Dera Bassi SDM said he would issue a notification to inform all councillors regarding the elections in a couple of days.
