Gangster Sampant Nehra was brought on production warrants by the Dera Bassi police here today to probe his role in an attempt-to-murder case registered against him on September 7, 2017.

Amid tight security, a team of over 10 police personnel, headed by Dera Bassi SHO Mohinder Singh, took Nehra inside the court premises and produced him before the court of Judicial Magistrate (Senior Division) Balwinder Kaur Dhaliwal at Dera Bassi, which remanded him in police custody till October 20.

The prosecution had sought seven-day police remand, but the court granted only five-day police remand. Later, Nehra was taken to the Civil hospital, Dera Bassi, for a medical check-up under tight security.

Mohinder Singh, SHO, Dera Bassi, said the main purpose of bringing Nehra on production warrants was to interrogate him about the case registered against him at the Dera Bassi police station in September last year. The SHO said the police sought his remand to recover the weapon.

The assailants of Daljit Singh, Banur councillor Preeti Walia’s husband, who was allegedly shot at in Banur on the night of September 7 last year, were escaping in a Ford Endeavour and abandoned the vehicle near Fathepur Jattan village after one of the tyres of the vehicle punctured. They tried to stop another car, but the owner of the vehicle sped away on seeing the armed men. The assailants then stopped a Swift car being driven by Major Singh, a resident of Chandiala village, and took away his car after firing a gunshot. Major was shot at on his thigh.

On a statement of Major, the police registered a case under Sections 307, 323, 341, 395, 148, 149 and 120-B and under the Arms Act at the Dera Bassi police station on September 7, 2017.

The police later recovered a Haryana registration number plate from the Ford Endeavour abandoned by the assailants near Fetehpur village. The Ford vehicle belonged to Sushil Bansal of Kurukshetra. Hailing from Rajgarh in Rajasthan, Nehra is a son of a retired UTASI, Ram Chander. He was nabbed by a special task force of the Haryana Police from Hyderabad on the night of June 6.
