Various measures have been taken by district administration and city Municipal Corporation (MC), but no substantial results are visible as far as menace of stray cattle is concerned in the city. Often, stray cattle have become a reason for accidents on highways. Now, the Deputy Commissioner, Kumar Amit, on Monday, said, all stray cattle in the city will be sent to the cow shelter at Gajipur village.

The Patiala Municipal Corporation (MC) had recently started tagging stray cattle with reflectors during the night. The tagging was done to avoid accidents, but no positive results were seen.

Meanwhile, many people have complained that the MC and the district administration have failed to solve the matter of increasing number of stray cattle.

A costermonger at Sabzi Mandi on Monday said, “The stray cattle are left to fend for themselves in the city by villagers. Such cattle do not get proper food and attack us. The sabzi mandi is bereft with the issue and many times cattle start fighting among themselves.”

Another commuter said, “Stray cattle cause accidents during the night. Last year, a man was killed as he was hit by a stray animal. The administration’s claims of checking the menace seem hollow.”

Meanwhile, the MC has sent about 1,600 stray cattle to various cow shelters which includes over 1,000 to Gajipur gaushala and over 200 to Sher-e-Punjab gaushala.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) on Monday said capacity of the ’gaushala’ in village Gajipur which could accommodate only 200 cattle last year has been increased to 1,200. He added, “The administration has only last week taken action and sent as many as 50 stray cattle from the city to the cow shelter in village Gajipur.”

The DC also directed the traffic police to ensure that no villager leaves his cattle on Patiala-Sangrur Road. The DC held a meeting with the road safety committee which decided to organise a sub-committee to gather feedback regarding various issues in the city.
