Mohali, August 12
With heaps of garbage lying all around and poor sanitary conditions, Shaheed Udham Singh Colony at Phase 8 here does not seem to be part of Mohali, which is being termed as Punjab’s Model Town.
In the absence of any proper arrangements for dumping of garbage, people have been throwing garbage in the open at several places here. As a result, all open places in the area have virtually turned into dumping yards.
“Garbage dumped all around raises stink throughout the day. It’s has even become difficult to breathe here,” said Ram Lal, a resident of the colony, which is also unauthorised.
Sarita Devi, another resident, said most of the residents in the colony are from poor background.
“Most of us are migrants. So, nobody cares about providing basic facilities here. The authorities have not even set up garbage dumping enclosures or dustbins in the area. People are throw garbage at any place near their houses,” said Sarita Devi.
The residents alleged that whenever it
rains, garbage starts flowing with water and scatters all around.
Another resident Shanti Devi said residents were at fault for poor sanitary conditions in the area.
“Several times, we have decided to throw our garbage at a specific location. But after a few days, most of the people start giving a damn to the decision,” said Shanti Devi.
She said most of women from the colony are working as maids and clean houses of nearby localities, but they are unable to clean the surroundings of the area where they live.
