To keep adulterated food products at bay ahead of the festive season, the district health department on Thursday raided shops selling sweets and dairy products in the city.

The department collected seven sweet samples from four sweet shops. After big catches of adulterated milk and dairy products in the state, the department is now planning to extend the vigil on adulterated sweetmeat and ‘khoya’ in the district.

Health officials first raided Maker Sweet Shop near Dukhniwaran Gurudwara, wherein officials collected samples of ‘gulab jamun’ and ‘rasgulla’.

After this, they collected samples of ‘barfi’ and ‘besan’ from Harbans Ice-Cream shop. Samples of milk-cake, ‘boondi laddoo’ from Manjit Sweet Shop and ‘khoya’ from another shop near Dukhinwaran Gurudwara were also collected.

Health officials said huge quantities of adulterated ‘khoya’ and sweetmeat had already been reportedly supplied to Punjab from neighboring states.

District Health Officer Krishan Singh said, “We have collected samples and sent those to the lab for testing. If we find out that sub-standard products are being used to prepare sweets, action will be taken.”
