Chandigarh, October 15

There cannot be anything more heroic and inspirational than the benevolent gesture of organ donation as shown by by the family of donor Mohinder Pal. They turned their gravest grief into ‘gift of life’ for three terminally ill organ failure patients and ‘gift of sight’ for two corneal blind patients with the transplantation of liver, kidneys and cornea at the PGIMER here.

Kashmir Kaur, wife of deceased Mohinder Pal (43), a resident of Malabedian village, Nawanshahr district, was shattered when she received the tragic news of her husband being grievously injured in a head-on collision with another two-wheeler near Nawanshahr.

The family immediately took him to a nearby hospital in Nawanshehr from where he was referred to the PGIMER and was admitted here on the same day. But the head injuries had caused irreversible brain damage and Pal was declared brain dead on October 11.

When counselled, the family consented for organ donation of Pal. Following this, the doctors went ahead with the retrieval of the liver and kidneys. Three persons, including one patient suffering from end-stage liver failure and two kidney patients, underwent successful transplants within 24 hours of the decision. The retrieved corneas restored the sight of two corneal blind patients after transplantation.
