The Indian Students Association (ISA) declared its panel on Monday at Panjab University (PU) and announced that they were open to contest elections alone as well.
The new president of the ISA is Gurpreet Singh, a PhD student from Biochemistry Department. The chairman is Kulbir Singh, who has completed his MA in political science.
Ranan Balkaran Singh Gill, one of the founders of the ISA, said they wanted to turn the campus into what every student and parent dreamt of.
Karan Randhawa, former joint secretary of the PU Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) said: “In the last one year, we have worked with students and no other party can claim of working more than us.”
Reading out his report card, he said ramps and construction of washroom for differently abled students at the Student Centre, renovation of washrooms at the dental institute and the Chemical Engineering Department, Arts block-4 and the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) were his achievements.
“It is because of the efforts of the ISA that a washing machine has been put up at the boys’ hostel number 4 on a trial basis. Washing machines do exist at girls’ hostels. If the trial is successful, washing machines will be bought for all boys’ hostels,” he said.
When asked whether the party was looking for a tie up, Gill said: “We are relying on our work. After taking a feedback, we will decide about the alliance. We can fight alone on all four seats too.”
Randhawa was earlier with the Students Organisation of India (SOI), which is a students’ wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal. Even during the protests over fee hike in 2017, he was with the SOI. He later broke away from the SOI and formed the Indian Students Association (ISA).
