The Municipal Council, Kharar, has become the first council in the state to convert biodegradable waste into organic compost using state-of-the-art machinery and paving the way to generate income for the municipality.

Giving information, Girish Dayalan, Deputy Commissioner, Mohali, said the MC had launched a pilot project for decentralised solid waste management. Under the initiative, a waste management processing plant was established by the MC at Civil Hospital road, where biodegradable waste was being converted into organic compost.

He said the project was launched on November 11 and the MC had produced almost one tonne of organic compost, which could generate income for the municipality by selling it to nurseries, household gardens and bulk purchasers.

Dayalan said in compliance with the NGT orders and government directions and Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, six more such small-scale plants in decentralised manner would be established to eliminate waste dumping and making city bin free.

He informed that a total of seven waste management plants would start working from January next year.

Divulging other details, Kulbir Singh Brar, Executive Officer, MC, mentioned that senior IAS officer of local government, hundreds of visitors, various organisations and other departments have visited and inspected the plant.

He said that all the dignitaries have been apprised in detail about making organic compost without any foul smell by using a combination of mechanical system and adopting best management practices. He apprised that machine can process three quintals of waste daily, which generates two quintals of organic compost.

Kulbir Sing Brar said the only solution to manage municipal solid waste and make city clean and green was by establishing more such small-scale decentralised mechanical systems with greater awareness among residents and their positive support.

He appealed that anyone interested in using organic compost in their gardens could get the compost bags from the compost shed located opposite the MC Park on Civil Hospital road, Kharar.
