Krishan eases into 2nd round

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh’s Krishan Hooda humbled Maharashtra’s Nirav Shetty in straight sets to seal a spot in the second round of the CCI Ramesh Desai Memorial U-16 Tennis Nationals at the Mumbai’s Cricket Club of India on Monday. The fifth seed won 6-2 6-2.

Chandigarh’s Krishan Hooda humbled Maharashtra’s Nirav Shetty in straight sets to seal a spot in the second round of the CCI Ramesh Desai Memorial U-16 Tennis Nationals at the Mumbai’s Cricket Club of India on Monday. The fifth seed won 6-2 6-2.

Haryana’s Chirag Duhan had an easy first round outing against state-mate Jasmeet Duhan. The second seed won 6-0 6-1. 

Karan Singh, also from Haryana, rallied from a set down to West Bengal’s Apurnava Majumdar. The ninth seed lost the opening set 3-6, but came back strongly to clinch the next two sets 6-3 6-0 to stay alive in the competition. 

Chandigarh’s Jitin Chetry, meanwhile, bowed to Maharashtra’s Karim Khan 0-6 1-6. Haryana’s Aditya Nandal and Vansh Nandal also made early exit from the tournament.  

Aditya went down 4-6 0-6 to third seed Denim Yadav of Madhya Pradesh, while Vansh lost 4-6 0-6 to Maharashtra’s Daksha Agarwal. Haryana’s Ansh Kundu also crashed out in the opening round. Kundu succumbed 2-6 0-6 to Anargha Ganguly of Maharashtra.

Local lad Saheb Singh Sodhi knocked out sixth seed Arjun Kundu of Gujarat in an intense three-setter. Sodhi won 7-6(5) 4-6 7-6(3).

Bushan Haobam of Manipur and Arjun Gohad of Maharashtra also carved out surprise first round victories. Haobam upset seventh seed Aayush Bhat of Karnataka 4-6 6-0 6-2, while Gohad accounted for 13th seed Dhanya Shah of Gujarat1-6 6-2 6-1. — TNS/Agencies
