Chandigarh, October 13

Seven years after a 28-year-old man snatched a mobile phone, a local court sentenced him to one-year imprisonment.

The convict, Acchay Lal, was found guilty under Sections 356, 379 and 411 of the IPC. Meanwhile, Ram Chander, another accused in the case, has been declared a proclaimed offender (PO) by the court. Acchay was also a PO, but he had surrendered before the court.

As per information, Vijay Kumar of Mani Majra told the police that he was going home from IT Park around 8 pm on March 12, 2011. He stopped on the roadside to attend a phone call near Shastri Nagar. Two persons came there and one of them caught hold of him while the other snatched his mobile phone.

During investigation, Ram Chander and Acchay Lal were arrested after the complainant identified them. The mobile phone was recovered from Achhay Lal, whereas the SIM card was recovered from Ram Chander.

During the case proceedings, the duo got bail and both absented themselves from the proceedings. When they did not appear despite issuance of non-bailable warrants, they were declared proclaimed offenders in January 2014. However, Achhay Lal later surrendered before the court and faced trial.
