Chandigarh, July 10

In a major relief to residents, the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) of the Municipal Corporation has decided to revert to the parking charges that were prevalent before March 31 this year.

In a meeting here on Tuesday, the committee decided that the old rates should be brought in force immediately with an anticipatory approval of the MC General House.

The committee decided to end the hourly fee and charge Rs 5 for parking of two-wheelers and Rs 10 for four-wheeler at flat rate from July 11. Besides, the monthly pass facility has been scrapped for the time being. The rates for multi-level parking in Sector 17 will, however, remain the same. Monthly passes for parking of two-wheelers and four-wheelers will also continue to exist.

Mayor Davesh Moudgil said the F&CC members asked the MC officials to immediately start exploring a better model for running the paid parking lots in the city and bring the agenda in the next General House meeting for discussion so that a decision could be taken on the issue.

He said the committee further decided to deploy 480 personnel in two shifts for running the paid parking lots for a period of two month or till the fresh tender for operation and management of the facilities was received by the civic body. Besides, 55 supervisors will be collecting cash and keeping a check at the parking lots.

Moudgil said a committee comprising MC Joint Commissioner, Chief Engineer and Chief Accounts Officer, had been formed to fulfill the procedural formalities to run these parking lots by increasing the number of outsources employees by 480.

The F&CC meeting was held under the chairmanship of Mayor Davesh Moudgil and was attended by other members of the panel, namely Anil Kumar Dubey, Farmila, Gurbax Rawat, Heera Negi and Raj Bala Malik. MC officials, including Additional Commissioners Saurabh Mishra and Anil Kumar Garg, Joint Commissioner Tejdeep Singh Saini and Chief Engineer Manoj Bansal were also present.

Firm moves HC

Officials of M/s Arya Toll Infra Ltd, the firm running the paid parking lots in the city till Sunday, said the contractor on Tuesday challenged the decision of the MC to cancel the parking contract in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, claiming it to be injustice.
