A local court here today couldn’t advance the arguments on quantum of punishment in new year night murder case as lawyer representing Mohd Arif, who was held guilty by the court on November 23, didn’t appear in the court. The matter was fixed for next court hearing on December 2.

Deepak Kumar (22), a resident of Baddi (Himachal Pradesh), was stabbed to death behind Hotel Cove, Sector 5, Panchkula, on the intervening night of December 31, 2016, and January 1, 2017, by a group of men over parking issue.

On November 23, the court had held Mohd Arif and Virender guilty under Sections 304 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and acquitted five others, including Nishant, Mohd Ijhar, Mohd Ajmal, Osaf Ahmad and Rajan.

Defence counsel Amit Sharma said an altercation had taken place between two groups over parking, which resulted in Deepak’s death. He said another youth was also injured in the fight.
