With just around a week left for the last date of filing nominations in Chandigarh and the BJP yet to declare its candidate, ruling party workers are losing patience and voters are surprised.

“When the Congress can announce its candidate, why can’t a ruling party? What are they afraid of? The inordinate delay has only proved to residents that the party is so much divided that it is not able to announce its candidate. They should have declared the candidate one or two months ago. It is fighting faceless,” said Baljinder Singh Bittu, chairman, Federation of Sector Welfare Association Chandigarh (FOSWAC).

Kamaljit Singh Panchhi, president of the Chandigarh Traders Association, said: “A candidate is more important than a party. When other parties have already declared candidates, what is holding the BJP? We have several demands that we can raise with the candidate, but if only if we know who is the person.”

A BJP party worker, preferring anonymity, said: “Now, we are also fed up. We do not know who among the three contenders is going to be our candidate. The Congress and the AAP have gone far ahead in the campaigning as their local wings know their candidate.”

The ruling party, which has three ticket aspirants - local MP Kirron Kher, former MP Satya Pal Jain and city party president Sanjay Tandon - has failed to make up its mind yet. The city unit is said to be divided into two groups - one headed by Tandon and other by the MP. However, both deny the same. Nominations are to be filed on April 29.

Tandon said: “It is up to the High Command when they declare the candidate. We are waiting for the same and it could be announced anytime.”

Amritsar seat speculation put to rest

With the BJP High Command on Sunday announcing the name of Hardeep Puri from the Amritsar constituency, speculation of one of the ticket contenders from Chandigarh to be given ticket from this Punjab seat has been put to rest. It was earlier being said that MP Kirron Kher has been asked to contest from Amritsar, but she has refused the offer. Later, it was said that Tandon, whose father Balramji Dass Tandon, a five-time MLA from Amritsar and once from Rajpura, was also offered to contest from there. Though, the two leaders had denied the same.
