Chandigarh, February 19
Facing criticism and objections from various quarters, MC Commissioner KK Yadav has halted all ongoing works related to paver block in the city.
In an order issued today, Yadav has formed a three-member committee, headed by the Special Secretary, MC, to review all ongoing and allotted paver block works on case-to-case basis. The panel will later recommend such works in consonance with the policy approved by the Chief Architect.
In the order, the MC Commissioner stated that the Chief Architect’s guidelines on paver blocks should be followed religiously.
“It has been noticed that there are some ongoing works, works to be allotted or started. Status quo has to be maintained in all such cases,” the order read.
Other members of the committee are the Chief Engineer and the Superintending Engineer (B&R).
The order comes after several resident welfare associations opposed laying of paver blocks while ignoring the guidelines issued by the Chief Architect.
Despite objections, the MC General House had during a meeting recently approved paver blocks worth Rs 26 crore for various sectors. Over Rs 5 crore was also approved for the ward represented by Mayor Rajesh Kalia. The Standing Committee of the Administrator’s Advisory Council on Environment has also strongly recommended discouraging the use of paver blocks in the city. The Chief Architect has banned paver blocks on V6 roads and around the trees.
