Patiala, December 4

A satirical comedy Gadhe Ki Baraat was staged on the fifth day of the 6th Norah Richards National Theatre Festival organised by the Sarthak Rangmanch in association with the North Zone Culture Centre (NZCC) and Punjabi Academy, New Delhi at Kala Bhawan, Punjabi University.

The play was written by Hari Bhai Vadgonkar and directed by VD Trikha. Dr MS Nijjar, Registrar, Punjabi University, was the chief guest.

The play focused on the divide between rich and poor people and activities of the rulers. It revolved around the awkward task of constructing a bridge between the slums and the king’s palace, a condition raised by princess for her marriage.

The construction of a bridge carries a connotative meaning regarding bridging the gap between the poor and rich. Later, a poor man, Kallu, achieves the feat and ties the wedding knot of his son, a donkey, with the princess. But the latter gets arrogant after looking at the glitter in the palace. He meets his fate after the bridge is destroyed upon the king’s orders.
