The Punjab Police and the special task force (STF) formed to curb the drug menace on Monday initiated a state-level programme in which school, college and university students will be apprised of the ill-effects of drug abuse.

State Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora, DGP (STF) Muhammad Mustafa and DGP (Law and Order) Hardeep Singh Dhillon inaugurated the programme at Chitkara University in Rajpura on Monday.

Senior police officers said cultural programmes would be organised to make the students aware of the harmful effects of drugs.

Additional Chief Secretary NS Kalsi was also present on the occasion.

While speaking to the students, Kalsi said, “Students today have to change themselves according to the new and upcoming technology. This can only be done by staying away from the issues that harm society, including drugs.”

DGP Arora said the government was serious and committed to wipe out the menace of drug abuse from the state. “We have already broken the supply chain of drugs in the state. Now, we have started the buddy and Drug Abuse Prevention Officer (DAPO) programmes to keep youngsters away from drug abuse and decrease the demands for drugs.”

The DGP said the Punjab police officers would visit all universities, colleges and schools to hold such programmes with the help of cultural groups of the police force.

Students from the Punjabi University’s theatre group and artistes from the cultural troupe of the Punjab Police presented various cultural programmes on the occasion.
