Chandigarh, October 15

Politics is at play in Panjab University (PU) as the time for changing faculties draws nearer. In a letter to all Senators from the PU, it has been intimated that the last date to change faculties is November 5. The choice of faculties impacts the outcome of Syndicate elections, which are due in December.

The groups led by Prof Navdeep Goyal and Ashok Goyal would try to outsmart each other during the Syndicate poll. When faculties are assigned to Senators, they vote accordingly for the Syndicate elections.

There are three seats each in arts, science and combined faculties and two each in law, languages and medical sciences faculties. The combined faculty comprises business management and commerce; dairying, animal husbandry and agriculture; design and fine arts; education; engineering and technology; and pharmaceutical sciences.

Most members of Ashok Goyal’s group have opted for languages and medical faculties. They surprised all in 2017 by winning two seats despite being in minority. The rest of seats went to Prof Navdeep Goyal’s group.

As per Regulation 2.1 of the PU Calendar Volume-1, Senators will be assigned faculties for the whole of their term, but no member will be assigned to more than two out of the faculties of languages, arts, science, law and medical sciences and not more than two out of the remaining faculties.

A fellow could seek change in faculties after expiry of two years of Senate, which is October 31, for the current members. “A number of Senators can change their faculties,” said Prof Navdeep Goyal.
