Congress leaders in the city today dedicated the victory of Preneet Kaur with a record margin to Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, and the hard work put in by the local party cadre, who worked tirelessly for their candidate’s win.

With this win, Preneet Kaur will become Member of Parliament (MP) from the Patiala constituency for the fourth time. Her success in the Lok Sabha elections has once again rendered party supporters in a jubilant mood.

The Congress’ performance in Patiala (Urban/ Rural) constituencies has brought laurels for the local party workers, who have been managing Preneet’s election campaign from the past around three months, even before the polls were announced.

Congress activists today celebrated the victory of party candidate Preneet Kaur by distributing laddoos, bursting crackers and dancing in streets.

Preneet Kaur said, “Patiala (Urban/Rural) cadre activists worked together and without any factionalism. This helped us get a big margin from these two constituencies. People have reposed faith in the development.”

Patiala Mayor Sanjiv Sharma Bittu, who handled the inner heart of the city and attended over 10 functions in a day, said, “Preneet Kaur’s victory against Shiromani Akali Dal’s Surjit Singh Rakhra and Nawan Punjab Party candidate and incumbent MP, Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, has come due to various developmental projects undertaken in the last two years and efforts of party leaders behind the curtains.”

“Various developmental works are the sole reason, which helped us garner over 65,000 votes in Patiala (Urban/Rural) constituencies,” the Mayor said while adding that all work would be completed soon.

During celebrations at Preneet Kaur’s residence party workers said, “A lot of work has been done behind the curtains that helped the Congress attain victory in the Lok Sabha elections.”

KK Malhotra, who was appointed party’s Patiala (Urban) president recently, said, “The party’s working style and Preneet Kaur’s personal interest have led her to the victory. She has been working hard for development in the city and addressed concerns of the people. She has brought a number of projects for the city.”

According to KK Sharma, Chairman, Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC), another party member who worked behind the curtains, “Congress has been connected with the people at the door-to-door level. We have a direct link with the people. The people have known since long that the party has brought all development to the constituency as we are attached to the ground reality.”

For party leaders in the Municipal Corporation, including Sanjiv Sharma Bittu, Mayor, and Yoginder Singh Yogi, Senior Deputy Mayor, timely implementation of developmental projects was the major reason behind Congress’ victory.

“The dairy shifting project pending since 2003 has been started. Broken roads have been re-carpeted. Garbage collection and disposal, which remain major concerns, have been initiated after the party came to power in the state. The people have liked our work and voted us to power,” they added.

“The fact that funds are not a problem for development works and with few other projects lined up, we are sure to turn Patiala into one of the most developed cities of the country,” said Bittu.

In Patiala (Urban), the Chief Minister’s home constituency, Preneet Kaur bagged 56,074 votes and got an overall lead of 35,489 votes. The SAD-BJP candidate performed poorly with a mere 20,585 votes. In Patiala (Rural) Preneet got a lead of 30,560 votes by polling 61,412 votes as compared to 30,852 votes.
