The affiliation committee of the PU today sought an explanation from Rosy Walia, principal of Post Graduate Government College (PGGC), Sector 46, for scrapping two BCom (honours) course mid-session.

The committee has directed the college principal to reply by Tuesday afternoon. Sources say the committee has also sought details of all other honours courses in the college and the number of students enrolled.

Earlier, affected students had submitted a representation to the college authorities in this regard. Some students out of the five — three from the PGGC-46 and two from the Government College of Commerce and Business Administration (GCCBA) — enrolled in the course submitted a requisition to college on Friday, asking the authorities to revoke the decision of discontinuing the course.

Students wrote to the PU, PGGC-46 and Director, Higher Education, that they had sought admission to the BCom (honours) in accounting and finance in August this year after taking permission from the authorities of both colleges, but the course has now been cancelled. “For the past three months, we have been attending classes for the course and about 70 per cent of the syllabus has been completed. We have also paid Rs 700 fee for this course,” read their request.

Deadline for colleges

Sources say affiliated colleges in Punjab, which have taken measures for complying with conditions imposed by the inspection committee of the PU, have been granted provisional affiliation subject to final compliance with the conditions by December 15.

However, colleges that have not taken any concrete steps to remove the deficiencies have been declined the extension of affiliation. The conditions underlined by the committee were in connection with the appointment of faculty, payment of salaries and provident fund to the college staff. A large number of BEd colleges are under the scrutiny of the affiliation committee.

Courses hanging fire

In July, the PU affiliation committee extended temporary affiliation to the BBA course at the PGGC-46 and all courses at the GCCBA-50 for the 2019-2020 session, subject to the condition that they will appoint regular faculty. However, the committee had not given its approval for starting BCA-I (second unit) at the PGGC-46. The final affiliation to the said courses is hanging fire.
