Punjab Police ease into semis

CHANDIGARH:Punjab Police registered a 3-0 win over South Central Railway to enter the semifinals of the 47th SN Vohra’s All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament (A Grade) at the Sector 42 Sports Complex, here, on Thursday.

Punjab Police registered a 3-0 win over South Central Railway to enter the semifinals of the 47th SN Vohra’s All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament (A Grade) at the Sector 42 Sports Complex, here, on Thursday. 

Mandeep Singh scored the opening goal for Punjab Police in the 19th minute and six minutes later, PH Biju Singh doubled their lead.

Daman then scored through a penalty corner in the 42nd minute to seal a 3-0 win for the team.

Punjab & Sind Bank advance

In the second quarterfinal, Punjab & Sind Bank beat Central Railway 5-3 on penalties after the two sides were held 3-3 at the end of the regulation time. 

Central Railway took the lead in the ninth minute through Vikas but Punjab & Sind Bank restored the parity five minutes before the interval — Jagjot scoring in the 30th minute of the match.

After the break, Satbir scored twice (56th, 59th) to help Punjab Police take a 3-1 lead. However, the side could not hold on to the advantage for long as Central Railway drew level through Vikas’ twin strike (61st, 65th).      

Punjab & Sind Bank, however, prevailed 5-3 in the tie-breaker to set-up the semifinal with Indian Air Force.

Punjab National Bank will play Punjab Police for a place in the final.
