Rain cuts off villages from main road

Kharar, August 12

The local legislator, Kanwar Sandhu, on Sunday visited Baghindi, Kassoli and Jayanti Majri villages in SAS Nagar (Mohali) district, which had been ravaged and cut-off from other parts of the state due to rains.

Talking to newsmen, Sandhu said in Baghindi heavy rains during the past two days had caused heavy damage and water had entered homes of villagers. Standing maize and other crops were damaged and the village was cut-off as the road was washed away, he added.

“This happened because the government has failed to construct three small bridges on ‘barsaati nalas’ (seasonal rivulets) between Kassoli and Baghindi as promised by the then PWD Minister, Razia Sultana, in the last session of the Vidhan Sabha,” the MLA added.

The MLA informed the SAS Nagar Deputy Commissioner, Gurpreet Sapra, that he would be taking up the matter with the new PWD Minister, Vijay Inder Singla.

He urged the government to take up the repair of roads in the area and save the two main bridges with additional earth and stone work, besides calculating the loss of villagers due to damage to their crops so that adequate compensation could be provided to them.

The Kharar BDPO, Rana Partap Singh, who also holds additional charge of the Majri block, visited the area where the MLA was present along with team of officials to take stock of the situation. — OC
