Chandigarh, May 21

Haryana Renne Singla dismissed Telangana’s Apurva Vemuri in straight sets to enter girls’ U-16 third round in the CCI Ramesh Desai Memorial U-16 Tennis Nationals in Mumbai on Tuesday. Renne won 6-1 6-1.

Anjali Rathi and Pari Singh, both from Haryana, also won their respective second round matches. While Anjali downed Telangana’s Aarni Yellu 6-2 6-0, Pari registered a 6-4 6-2 win over Karnataka’s Deepshika Sriram.

In the biggest upset of the day, Karnataka’s Naisha Srivastav packed off second seed Renee Singh of Rajasthan with consummate ease.

Lanky, bespectacled Naisha, ranked 65th in the country, served consistently and dominated the rallies to unsettle Renee, who is ranked fifth, and cruised to a 6-4 6-2 win.

However, top seed Sirimalla Sanjana of Telangana did not have to exert herself too much as she sailed past Kanupriya Rajawat of Rajasthan 6-0 6-0.

Krishan advances

In the boys’ U-16 second round, Haryana’s Krishan Hooda humbled Divgurjot Singh 6-3 6-2, while Karan Singh, also from Haryana, drubbed Uttar Pradesh’s Kush Sharma 6 -1 6-1. Punjab’s Dhruv Tangri had an easy outing against Haryana’s Agriya Yadav. Tangri won 6-0 6-0.

Aman Dahiya of Haryana edged out Delhi’s Kartik Saxena 6-1 6-2. Ajay Singh, also from Haryana, dumped Tushar Mittal of Delhi 6-1 6-0, while Chirag Duhan continued his impressive run to oust Karnataka’s Nikhil Niranjan. The Haryana youngster won 6-4 6-2.

Chandigarh’s Rishi Jalota, meanwhile, succumbed to Madhya Pradesh’s Deep Munim 1-6 3-6, while Sukhpreet Jhoje lost 1-6 3-6 to Denim Yadav of Madhya Pradesh.

Top seed Udit Gogoi of Assam crashed at the first hurdle, going down to Ayushmaan Arjeria of Madhya Pradesh in a hard-fought first round match. Arjeria played steadily and won some close points to clinch a 6-3 4-6 7-5 victory.

The MP boy proved that his win over the top seed was no flash in the pan as he later entered the last 16 by ousting Karim Alim Khan of Maharashtra in straight sets. —  TNS/Agencies
