An all-round performance by Sanvir Singh helped Punjab register a five-wicket win over Uttar Pradesh in a Men’s Cricket U-23 One Day League and Knockout tournament match at KL Saini Stadium in Jaipur on Wednesday.

Put into bat, Uttar Pradesh were bowled out for 117 runs in 38.4 overs as Sanvir and Arshdeep Singh ran through the side. While Sanvir returned with figures of 5/21, Arshdeep claimed 4/23 in his 7.4 overs.

Madhav Kaushik and Abhishek Yadav were the only two UP batsmen to score in double digits.

UP had a disastrous start to their innings as they lost opener Abhishek Goswami (4) to Sanvir for seven runs. The speedster struck again in the 10th over, removing Almas Shaukat on four. Skipper Mohammad Saif (4), Karan Sharma (0) and Hannan Rizwan (0) also failed to cope with the Sanvir’s nagging accuracy.

With the side in trouble at 5/33, Kaushik and Yadav showed some application and stretched the total to 81 runs before Harpreet Brar broke the 48-run partnership in the 31st over. Yadav was clean bowled after scoring a 30-ball 51.

Arshdeep then got into the act and dismissed wicketkeeper-batsman Sandeep Kumar (8) and Trishal Vijay Trivedi (6) before trapping Kaushik in front of wickets on 45. Wajid Ali was caught by Nikhil Chaudhary off Arshdeep on zero as Punjab wrapped up UP innings on 117.

Chasing a small total, Punjab lost openers Mansab Gill (2) and Shivam Bhambri (7) on 18 runs. Himanshu Sharma and Ramandeep Singh did not last long either. While Sharma fell to Wajid Ali on two, Ramandeep was caught by Abhishek Yadav off Trivedi on 11.

Sanvir then stitched a 53-run partnership with Abhishek Sharma for the fifth wicket to pull Punjab out of a mess. Sharma was caught by Abhishek Yadav off Sunil Kumar after scoring run-a-ball 24.

Abhinav Sharma who walked in at the fall of Abhishek’s wicket, however, blasted 18 runs off 11 balls to help Punjab reach home in 30.5 overs. Sanvir remained unbeaten on 52.

Wajid and Sunil Kumar claimed two wickets each while Trivedi picked 1/18.

The fourth successive win helped Punjab gain four points and stay behind table toppers Karnataka in Elite Group A and B.

Meanwhile, in an Elite Group C match, Haryana defeated Assam by 201 runs at Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad and jumped to fourth place with eight points from four matches.

Haryana beat Assam

Put in to bat, Haryana rode on 172-run opening stand between VA Bhardwaj and SG Rohilla to score 299 runs in 50 overs.

Rohilla fell to Rahul Singh after scoring a 96-ball 71. Bhardwaj made 104 runs before he became Rahul’s second victim. His 122-ball stay in the middle was studded with 12 boundaries and two sixes.

Skipper SR Chauhan made 26 runs, while Prashant Vashist remained not out on 29. AR Rana chipped in with a 20-ball 27.

Rahul Singh claimed 2/53 for Assam, while Dharani Rabha (1/42) and Nipan Deka (1/44) picked a wicket each.

Needing to score six runs per over for victory, Assam were bowled out for 98 runs in 29.5 overs. AR Rana was the wrecker-in-chief for Haryana, claiming 5/26. MS Rathee took 2/6.

Skipper Biplab Saikia (22) was the top scorer for Assam, while Erik Roy added 18 runs to the chase.
