At the garbage-dump segregation point of the Municipal Corporation in Sector 42, right behind the petrol pump, a heated argument broke out between a forest official and workers of Lion Services, a firm hired by the civic body to maintain cleanliness in the city for Rs 60 crore a year.

Prabhunath Sahi, the forest official, was on the spot inspecting pruning of trees, an issue that the residents had complained about, when a garbage-laden tempo of Lion Services dumped the waste in the forest area right next to the segregation point. He said, “When I tried to stop the man from doing so, he picked up a fight with me and started gathering people. I informed the block officer and the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) about the issue, and rang up cops too. This is not the first time that this issue has cropped up. Employees of the company have been repeatedly dumping waste here.”

This correspondent reached the spot and found foul smell emanating from the garbage scattered right next to the bricked boundary wall of the MC garbage segregation point. It made breathing difficult. Among plastic waste, discarded toilet pots too were spotted inside the forest area.

When contacted, DCF Dr Abdul Qayum said, “Household waste is being dumped in the area. We have employed forester Prabhunath Sahi there. I spoke to an executive engineer of the MC about the issued during a CPCB meeting, but nothing has been done yet. The company has been hired by the MC and its employees have been repeatedly dumping waste here since a week now. I will write to the MC Commissioner and lodge a complaint with the police if they don’t stop.”

Medical Officer Health (MOH) Amrit Singh, who also resides in the sector, intended to take a strong stance on the issue. He said, “The matter was being nipped in the bud; no one from the company informed me about it. A CPCB official told me about the dumping of garbage here. I have summoned its GM and other officials to my office so that this issue is resolved for once and all.”

However, the GM of Lion Services, Pardhuman, shared, “I will meet the MOH tomorrow. However, it is local garbage-pickers who litter the area. We will resolve the issue.”

The situation is no different at the MC garbage segregation point in Sector 44. Garbage was found dumped in forest area. Though the segregation point was somewhat clean, the area around it was littered.
