The Congress MLA from Shutrana, Nirmal Singh, was  injured in a road accident near Dhareri Jattan village on the Patiala-Chandigarh highway this morning.

Nirmal Singh, along with his driver, security guard and personal assistant (PA), was on his way to Chandigarh to attend the  ongoing Budget session when the mishap took place. The injured were taken to Government Rajindra Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the mishap took  place when a cab (Ritz), which was coming from the Chandigarh side, rammed into the  official vehicle (Innova) of the MLA near the Dhareri Jattan toll plaza.  One of the eyewitnesses, Pinki Kaur, told The Tribune that the mishap  took place around 9.30 am. The security guard, who was sitting on the front passenger seat, also received injuries in the accident.

According to the police, the Ritz car driver lost control after one of  its tyres burst and rammed into the legislator’s car head-on. The impact of the collision was so severe that all airbags of the car got  opened.

Dr Manjit Singh, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, said, “MLA Nirmal Singh has got a fracture in  his finger and received some injuries on the chest. Due to the accident, he was in a shock; his blood pressure was also high, but he is  out of danger.”

Dr Manjit said the MLA had been advised hospitalisation for the next 24 hours.

Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit, Senior  Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu and Superintendent  of Police (SP) Kesar Singh met the injured and enquired about their  health at the hospital.
