Simranjot’s brace helps Punjab beat SSCB 5-1

CHANDIGARH:After going down to Tamil Nadu in their opening match, Hockey Punjab on Monday humbled Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) 5-1 to register their first win in the 9th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2019 (A Division) in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

After going down to Tamil Nadu in their opening match, Hockey Punjab on Monday humbled Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) 5-1 to register their first win in the 9th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2019 (A Division) in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

Simranjot Singh (3rd, 7th) struck twice, while Vishaljit Singh (49th), Raman Kumar (53rd) and Angadbir Singh (60th) added a goal each to the Punjab tally. 

Deepak scored the lone goal for Services Sports Control Board in the 12th minute.

In the other Pool A match, Hockey Himachal came from behind to hold Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu to a 2-2 draw. 

Tamil Nadu took a two goal lead through S Karthi (44th) and S Mareeswaran (48th), but Himachal scored in the 57th and 59th minutes to restore the parity.  

Charanjeet Singh and Amit struck for Himachal. 

Haryana edge past J’khand 

In Pool B, Hockey Haryana secured a 3-2 win over Hockey Jharkhand. Haryana boys scored twice in the opening 36 minutes to take a 2-0 lead, but Jharkhand cancelled the lead after 45 minutes, only for Haryana to score the winner in the 56th minute. 

Ankush (4th, 36th) scored a brace, while Parmeet (56th) struck once for Haryana, while captain Anurud Bhengra (42nd) and Raju Horo (45th) scored for Jharkhand.

Manipur Hockey defeated The Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd 4-3 in the other Pool B match. 

Nirajkumar Waribam (19th, 47th) and Rohit Irengbam (28th, 32nd) scored for Manipur, while Mohit Kathoute (43rd, 52nd) and Anil Rathod (38th) struck for Mumbai.

Gangpur down M’rashtra 

Hockey Gangpur-Odisha beat Hockey Maharashtra 2-1 in a Pool C encounter on Monday. 

Maharashtra took the lead in the 28th minute through Venketesh Kenche, but Amandeep Lakra (36th) and Gregory Xess (51st) scored a goal each to help Gangpur-Odisha to a 2-1 win.

The other Pool C match saw Delhi Hockey beat Hockey Karnataka 3-0. Prashant (51st, 55th) scored a brace, while Bharat (44th) scored once for the side.

Sports Authority of India (SAI), meanwhile, beat Punjab & Sind Bank 2-1 in the only match of Pool D played on Monday. 

The bankers took the lead in the 53rd minute through Harkawalbir Singh, but SAI struck twice in the last six minutes to earn three points. 

Mohammad Saif Khan (54th) and captain Deepak Dharambir (59th) scored a goal each for SAI.
