Ambala: Six persons sustained injuries in an accident involving three vehicles near Tangail Road in Ambala on Saturday morning. According to information, a sand-laden dumper was on its way towards Yamunanagar. As it reached near Tangail Road, its driver took a sharp turn and hit a truck. A car, which was going towards Yamunanagar, also got involved in the accident. Besides the dumper and truck drivers, four out of five occupants of the car were also injured in the accident. The injured were identified as Pankaj, Danish, Goldy and Aish, a child. TNS

Rape case against youth

Ambala:  The Ambala police have registered a case against a youth for raping a girl on the pretext of marriage. The accused has been identified as Manjit Singh, a resident of Rohtak. A zero FIR in this regard was lodged in Delhi recently and the case has been transferred to the Ambala police.  The victim, a resident of Delhi, told the police that she studied at a college in Ambala and used to travel to Chandigarh for her job. She came in contact with Manjit, who allegedly raped her on the pretext of marriage. She had to abort her pregnancy. Initially, after the girl filed a complaint in this regard in Chandigarh, the accused apologised and promised to marry her. But again he refused to fulfil his commitment. The accused is yet to be arrested. TNS  

Man walks free in mishap case

Chandigarh: A Phagwara resident was acquitted by a local court on the charge of causing death by negligence after the victim’s wife turned hostile. Prakashvati, wife of victim Gopal Bhalla, was the complainant in the case. She had stated that Abhay Sharma had hit her husband’s Activa with his car. However, the complainant later stated that she did not know which vehicle or person hit her husband and the court declared her hostile. Last year, a case was registered at the Sector 11 police station on the complaint of Prakashvati, a resident of Sector 23 .  Prakashvati had stated in her complaint that she had noted down number of the car and could recognise the driver too. Later, she stated in the court that at that time she was not in a condition to remember the driver or note down number of the car. She told the police that on the night of the accident, she was riding an Activa with her husband. TNS   

Bawa helps DAV win

Chandigarh: DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, defeated St Stephan’s School, Sector 45, by 10 wickets in an inter-school boys’ U-17 cricket championship quarterfinal match here on Saturday. Batting first, St Stephen’s could only manage 74/7 in the allotted 20 overs. Parth made 14 runs, while Sidharth added 13 runs to the total. Raj Angad Bawa, Paras, Deepanshu and Saksham claimed two wickets each for the bowling side. In reply, DAV School achieved the target with relative ease. Bawa scored an unbeaten 44, while Shiv Arpit remained not out on 25. TNS

North Zone take 89-run lead

Chandigarh: Sachit claimed a fifer as North Zone gained a vital 89-run lead over West Zone on their opening day of their league match here on Saturday. Batting first, skipper Sachin Lotiya scored an impressive 69 to help North Zone score 196 runs in their first innings. Tushar Joshi added 36 runs to the total, while Sachit chipped in with 31 runs. Amit was the most effective bowler for West Zone, claiming four wickets. In reply, West Zone were all out for 76 runs as Sachit claimed a five-wicket haul. Following on, West Zone were batting on 31/0 at the draw of stumps. TNS

CGC, Jhanjeri, win kabaddi title

Mohali: Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC), Jhanjeri, won the IKG PTU’s Inter-College Kabaddi Tournament on Saturday. In the final, the hosts defeated IET, Bhaddal, 41-21. Earlier in the semifinals, the hosts had registered a 69-32 win over GNE College. A total of 13 colleges had participated in the championship. TNS
