Chandigarh, February 22

The Municipal Corporation has framed a common policy on providing facilities at the community centres in the city. The policy has been prepared with an aim to end ‘discrimination’ in providing facilities to residents.

Under the policy, all community centres will be equipped with sound proofing system. Other facilities to be provided there include portacabin for security staff, spiral stairs for separate entries in case of restaurants on the rooftop along with wrought iron furniture for 12 persons and an ATM facility.

The agenda in this connection will be placed before the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) of the civic body for its approval during a meeting scheduled for February 25.

Meanwhile, the agendas for providing cabin, bar counter, food counter, spiral stair, dumbwaiter and wrought (cast) aluminum furniture at the community centres in Sector 37 and 38 at an estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh would come up before the F&CC again. These were declined by former Mayor Devesh Moudgil in December last year.

Sources said with the change of Mayor, the agendas were being again placed before the committee for its approval. Kicking up a controversy, former Mayor Arun Sood had levelled an allegation that Moudgil deliberately did not approve the agendas of the community centres of his ward and focused only on his wards.

Industrial area crematorium

  • The MC has also proposed to make the cremation ground at the Industrial Area functional. For the purpose, the MC would invite expression of interest from NGOs or voluntary agencies. The agenda to get approval for this would be placed before the panel. The move follows a direction of UT Adviser Manoj Parida, who had asked the civic body to make the cremation ground functional. The cremation ground is lying closed for the past few years.
