The Deputy Commissioner, Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon, convened a meeting of school and college principals here on Monday.

The DC said Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rana KP Singh would launch a campaign on the theme of ‘Nashea Toh Azadi’ under the buddy programme on the eve of Independence Day in the district.

He said the Speaker would administer an oath to school and college students on the occasion. The DC added that all arrangements for the launch of the campaign had been made.

Giving details, the DC said the objective of the programme was to prevent the students from falling prey to drugs abuse by providing knowledge, imparting behavioral skills and developing a system for self-group monitoring and support.

Dhillon added that every school and college would constitute buddy groups comprising five students in each class and every class would be allotted to a teacher and he or she would be known as senior buddy.

“A nodal officer for each school will be appointed. Every week, the school head will provide 30 minutes to students to interact with each other in the buddy group. The students will be briefed on the ill-effects of drugs and how to say no to drugs,” the DC said. Dhillon stated that the school heads had been directed to constitute maximum buddy groups in their respective schools.
